Karta GPS New Feature: Navigate Even When your Phone is Dead

Posted by Adriano Teixeira In: Stuff We Like

On striving to continuously push the boundaries of navigation technology, Karta Software Technologies has just announced a new feature that is bound to agitate the app business worldwide.

It all started with our users feedback, really” – Said João Pedro Leite, COO of Karta’s navigation division, “the inability of navigating when the device is out of battery has always been a recurring complaint, so our team started questioning some of the deep-rooted tech and market assumptions. In a way, death is really just a concept, and a rather mysterious one, which is true both in biological and technical terms.

The Daryl Protocol (a rather obvious allusion to the popular TV series “The Walking Dead”) is based on the same principle that allows data not to be lost when a device is turned off or out of battery. By using this source, navigation and GPS access is still possible if the route was calculated before the device is completely out of battery.

“We are calling it OFFLIFE NAVIGATION. It’s fully developed and pending approval to be launched later this week and it will be exclusive to Karta GPS, both for iOS and Android. As developers, it’s our job to make dreams come true and create the optimal conditions to our service and respective business model. With this feature we expect a substantial increase in Karta’s usage, since the user is no longer shackled by the tyranny of battery autonomy.”

By the time of this interview, João Pedro Leite didn’t come clear if Karta will be open-sourcing this technology: “That’s definitely a possibility: this industry has always thrived on its openness, and we are not unaware of the potential of OFFLIFE technology in games and chatting software, but right now we are just focused on introducing this new mobile frontier to the public.”
